Underground Vietnam Military Patches
These patches were not sanctioned and approved by the United States Army. Handmade patches for soldiers began during the Vietnam era. Some soldiers wanted unique patches to represent significant events in a soldiers tour — an unrecognized battle, a particular subgroup or unofficial unit. These patches were worn secretly, on the inside of hats or the inside of shirts. They were secretly flashed to other members of the group or unit, but these patches were basically a private affair. In fact images of skulls on patches or insignias were officially forbidden by the military.
Awesome bit history right there.
Fun fact: this tradition still exists.
Although today, it’s migrated towards “tabs” more than full color patches.

Since I’m on an actual computer for a minute…
I’d like to officially call out soldierporn for being an incredibly awesome follower. I have never been more serious. I’m extremely grateful to have such awesome followers, and I appreciate every one of you. I just want to specifically acknowledge the person I see constantly supporting my blog.
I did some research (and some stalking) and learned that “The Curator” of soldierporn is actually a published writer, and has a book available for Kindle download here on Amazon. I read what was available on the “look inside” feature, and I was blown away. Dark, gritty, realistic… it’s a fucking war novel, man. With scenes of violence and torture so articulate that it made my heart speed up.
Anyway. After being so wonderfully supported, this is the very least I could do. You are awesome. It’s official.
Just so you know…
In all the years since the WWII invasion of Normandy, where over 10,000 service members died in a single afternoon, the US President has visited the D-Day Monument and honored the fallen. Every single year.
So serious is this homage to the military, that there are only three times in the last 68 years that a president has refused to pay this tribute.
